The Launceston Road Runners have continued to put in the miles, rounding out the summer with some more great race results, culminating in the Treggy 7 on Sunday, September 6.
The highlight of the club’s running calendar – the event - starting in Launceston Town Centre and finishing at the castle after a seven-mile loop taking in Tregadillett village (and one infamous hill), was well attended by nearly 400 runners from across the county and beyond.
Runners were lucky to compete under gorgeous sun and sky, with a fair bit of heat but a welcome breeze on the return into town.
First home was Callum James of Keighley and Craven AC of the Male Under 35 age group with a terrific time of 39 minutes and 37 seconds, followed by David Crawford (M35-39) of Newquay & Par AC in 40:58. Hot on his heels, but just a second back to take bronze was David Tregonning (Male Under 35 – unaffiliated).
The first female across the finish line was Emma Paull (F40-44) of Hayle Runners, who finished in 44:54 and came 19th overall. Second female home was Zelah Morrall of Cornwall AC in 48:35, followed by Joanne Robinson of Looe Pioneers with a time of 49:11.
As for Launceston Road Runners themselves, the results were as follows: David Thomson – 51:21, Jonathan Kappes – 52:58, Lewis Halliday – 53:47, Ben Hawke – 55:26, Matt Pickard – 58:36, Pete Wilkes – 59:13, Stuart Armstrong – 1:00:29, Kate Trott – 1:01:23, Andrew Simpson – 1:01:25, Ross Macdonald – 1:01:43, Katie Fowler – 1:03:11, Joanne Yeo – 1:03:16, Raoul Grantham – 1:03:31, Iona Pritchett – 1:04:20, Ian Grimes – 1:04:38, Graham Ashton – 1:05:15, Angela Brinicombe 1:08:34, Lisa Pascoe – 1:17:26, Mike Charlwood – 1:18:19, Natasha Ley – 1:19:57, Phoebe Barnes – 1:32:34.
Two members finished in the top three in their respective age categories with Kate Trott first (F60-64) and Angela Brinicombe (F65-69) third in hers. Congratulations everyone!
The event was really well organised and marshalled, with attractive medals featuring the landmark of Launceston Castle.
Huge thanks must go to Nicky Smith, Kevin Marshall and everyone who helped to organise the race, and to all of the many club members, family, friends and volunteers - including Devon and Cornwall Police Cadets - who gave up their time to marshal the course and keep everybody safe. Thanks were also expressed to the race sponsors for their support.
Members have also been at other events in recent weeks.
On Saturday, August 15, Dave Thomson took part in the Tavy 5K, a monthly road race hosted by Tavistock Athletics Club, where he finished with a time of 20:36 and placed first in his age category.
The next day saw Ann Barriball and Gaby Lyons compete in the Bath Two Tunnels 10K, which passes under the city itself, including one underground tunnel section over 1.6km in length. Ann finished with a time of 55:23 and Gaby in 1:04:50.
The final Sunday of the month on August 30 saw Andy Corbett continue to push himself in support of charity, by taking part in the Devon & Cornwall & Backyard Ultra.
This endurance race, raising money for Bowel Cancer West, gets runners to complete a 4.167-mile loop of Newnham Park every hour in Plymouth until only one person remains. Andy excelled himself by running 18 laps (75 miles) and coming 11th out of 116 runners.
