MOTORISTS using the A38 in South East Cornwall are being warned to expect delays following a serious road traffic collision in the Saltash tunnel.

Emergency services are currently on scene.

A witness on the scene has said they believe an elderly driver has crashed into a caravan.

A spokesperson for Tamar Crossings said: “The Saltash Tunnel is closed in both directions and we do not currently have an estimated time for when the closure will be lifted.

“All traffic travelling from Cornwall towards Plymouth is being directed via Saltash on to the Tamar Bridge North Cantilever.

“Please avoid the area and plan an alternative route if possible. If your journey is essential, please allow significant additional time and expect delays. We will provide further updates via our website as soon as we have more information at tamarcrossings.org.uk.”

Road users are being asked to follow the directions of emergency services and operational teams, as well as take care when approaching the toll plaza.

A Highways spokesperson said: “A38 Saltash Tunnel is closed in both directions, queueing traffic due to accident, car and lorry involved from B3271 New Road to A38 Tamar Bridge. Congestion to Carkeel Roundabout for Eastbound traffic and St Budeaux Junction for Westbound.”
