Abbeyfield House, Bude is looking for volunteers who may be able to spare some time to visit its elderly residents to give talks or provide entertainment.
They are also looking for anyone who has time and transport to occasionally take one or two residents out for a couple of hours in the morning or afternoon, perhaps for a coffee at a garden centre for example.
Situated at 8 Burn View, Bude, Abbeyfield provides supported sheltered housing for eight residents. The sheltered housing that Abbeyfield, a registered charity provides, gives residents the privacy and security they seek when managing alone in their own home has become a burden.
Residents can come and go as they please, receive visitors and enjoy home cooked meals each day. They are free from the worries of maintaining a house and garden, paying bills and dealing with loneliness.
Donna Gilbert, House Manager at Abbeyfield, Bude said "Volunteers are an important part of Abbeyfield as a whole and their input is vital. Just a few hours of a persons' time to help improve the quality of our residents' social lives is absolutely invaluable.
"Older people, like everyone, appreciate being valued. Many have a story to tell and a keen sense of humour. Volunteering can be an extremely rewarding and fulfilling experience.
"Anyone who can give just a small amount of time, even just once a month, perhaps hosting a bingo game, giving a talk or a slide show, or visiting for a chat and a cuppa, would be very welcome. The possibilities are endless and I'm open to discussion about what could be provided.
"In addition if anyone, either individuals or businesses, feel able to donate prizes for raffles and tombolas to be held at Abbeyfield, we would be very grateful. The ultimate aim is to raise enough funds to enable residents to enjoy a day out somewhere.
"Donations/prizes can be handed in at Abbeyfield House, 8 Burn View, Bude between the hours of 9am and 6pm.
"For potential volunteers to discuss opportunities, please contact me on (01288) 355163. There is an answer phone facility if I am unable to take the call at first contact, so please leave a message and contact details and I will call back."
