A CORNISH community came out in force to race in memory of a local teen who lost his life to cancer.
Residents in Bude dusted off their running shoes recently to take part in the Tal19 race in aid of Talan’s Trust.
Talan's Trust was established eight years ago in memory of Talan Penny from Bude, who lost his life to cancer aged just 19. A promise from his mother who said she would never let him be forgotten, Tal19 is an annual event which sees runners take on a course all about Talan. From some of Talan's favourite clubs, his childhood home where he was born and died, his schools and even where his favourite roast was to be found.
The event shines a light on the town’s caring community, who show their support by pushing themselves as they make their way around the meaningful course. This year, the race offered a 10km route, and a 19km route, one kilometre for every year of Talan’s life, as well as a fun run and a children’s race.
Sarah Penny, Talan’s mother, described the event as ‘a testament to Talan's strength and tenacity’.
She said: “We are so lucky to be supported by the most incredible team of volunteers!”
Residents come together to help run the entire event, from marshals, to time-keepers, and face painters.
Sarah continued: “The biggest thank you go to the runners without who we'd have no race. Thank you for sharing your stories and how your inspiration is Talan when the going gets tough, I like to think I have kept the promise I made him and he will never be forgotten.
“Talan may not have lived very long but he packed those years and lived his life to the very full. He was cheeky, funny and had a beautiful soul, he is missed beyond measure.”
