HISTORY was made in Cornwall at the weekend after nearly 2,500 people came together to break the Guinness World Record for the largest cream tea party.

A huge turnout of 2,438 gathered at the Royal Cornwall Showground on Saturday (September 19) to help break the official record in aid of Cornwall Hospice.

The previous record for the largest cream tea party held in one location stood at 1,088 people, which was achieved by a Chinese car dealership in November 2019.

To be counted towards the Guinness World Record attempt, participants to the Great Cornish Cream Tea event had to consume their entire portion of scone, jam and cream, as well as drink all of the tea in their cup.

The event, which took place near Wadebridge, brought together families, friends, volunteers, supporters and local businesses for a party that was hosted by comedian Johnny Cowling.

The Boscastle Buoys, Many Men Soundsystem, and Rock Choir Cornwall were also present to give stirring performances in front of the large crowd.

The record attempt, which marked the 45th anniversary of Cornwall Hospice Care, also celebrated the best of Cornish culture, community spirit and the joy of sharing food and conversation.

Vital funds raised from the event will support the charity’s work and make every moment matter for people with terminal illnesses and their families. Cornwall Hospice supports thousands of patients and families each year, providing compassionate specialist care, advice and support at some of life's most difficult moments.

Frazer Hopkins, Income Generation Director at Cornwall Hospice, said: "We are absolutely overwhelmed by the support shown by everyone who attended.

“Achieving a Guinness World Records title is a fantastic achievement, but what makes this so special is that it was accomplished by the community coming together for our hospices. Every person who joined us has helped raise awareness of the vital care we provide and the difference hospice care makes to local families every day."
