A DECORATOR from Bude has been involved in the most recently filmed series of the BBC series, DIY SOS.

Tom Davies, a decorator from Bude, who runs TJ Davies General Maintenance, was contacted by a representative from the BBC’s highly popular and often tear-jerking home renovation programme, DIY SOS, which sees a team of builders, decorators, plumbers, carpenters and more turn a home around for a family in need.

Tom first received a call from Alex Dickinson from the programme on the evening of Monday, March 19, who asked if he could help with a project for the show.

Because of the snow, their ‘big build’ had been disrupted and they needed more hands on deck. However, as he was so busy with his own work in Bude, Tom’s initial response was ‘no’.

But the production team soon convinced him to get involved when he received an email from Alex with some more information.

He was given an insight into the Plymouth family’s situation, who needed a home renovation desperately, and knew he had to get there to help out. Tom rang them back and said he would be there on Tuesday, March 20.

Tom said: “First person I met was Nick Knowles, who was outside waiting for a delivery. I had to sign in and met the other painters and decorators. My first task was to decorate a hallway with another decorator. Within an hour I had met the SOS team as they passed through the hallway.”

The team was provided with food, which was donated by the local community in Yealmpton, and dinner was had in the BBC canteen.

Tom returned the next day and helped to finish the kitchen and with all of the final touches throughout the house, with the reveal day on Thursday, March 22.

Tom added: “Reading about the family and their unfortunate circumstances made me go and do it. It turned out to be an amazing experience — two days I will never forget.

“I would urge anyone to go and do it if they get the chance.”
