New Season Lambs
Much larger entry and which hasn’t been seen for many years on Derby week.
The lamb trade was also stronger and still a lot more could have been sold with the overall average of 458.2ppk.
Pen after pen over 462ppk to a top of 470ppk for a pen of Texels at 42kgs to £197.50 from Peter Risdon of Basil Farm, St Clether.
2 vendors at 468ppk, David Grigg of Monkleigh had his 45.4kgs to £212.50 and Nigel Cleave of Launcells had his 44kgs to £206. Mike Huxtable of Huntshaw saw his 45kgs realise 466ppk to £209.50.
Top per head on the day was £214 from 2 vendors, J Prideaux of Bude and RG Wooldridge of Halwill.
Draft Ewes
Similar entry but the trade was flying from start to finish with a lot of lean ewes on offer.
The overall average on the day was £167.74 selling to a top of £211 for a double pen of Texels from David Broad of Davina, Tintagel.
Suffolk x ewes to £199 from Richard Drew of Halls Farm, Stibb. Mules to £181 and Polled Dorset to £174.
Store Sheep
A flock dispersal from Stuart Woollen of Northam met with much interest.
Doubles to £390 and singles to £290 and dry ewe hoggs to £235 and Polled Dorset 6T ram to £380.
300 Calves
Milk Calves
A tremendous summer entry of 300 rearing calves at Holsworthy which sold to an outstanding trade.
All calves forward averaged an impressive £506/head. Both trade and numbers strides ahead of other centres, keep the calves coming.
Top of the milk calf section was £815 given for a brilliant Charolais bull sold by Tull Farms, further Charolais drew £720 x2 and £718 for D Philip & Son, Looe, £710 and £690 for the Wearing Family of Tavistock and £670, £590, £582 and £570 all for LJ Goaman & Sons.
Up next was £760 given for a top notch Blue bull from Pete Martin of Buckland Filliegh.
Others £710 for WJ Hobbs & Son, Morwenstow. £700 for the Parkhouse Family, St Austell, £680 for V & M Brown & Son, Buckland Brewer, £655 for D Philip & Son, £642 for Chris Eddy, Truro and £640 for Laneslade Dairy Ltd, Brayford.
ARP Farming presented a cracking Limousin bull which parted at £745, others £640 WJ Hobbs & Sons and £600 LJ Goaman & Sons. 50 Angus bulls sold to the dearest trade ever seen at Holsworthy and with 90% of them being under 1 month old and 16 over £600.
Top was £678 given for a exceptional bull from Nick & Kate Bowden of Highampton, £638 and £635 for AJ & P Nancekivell, Kilkhampton, £635 D Philip & Sons, £630 SG & R Ley, Sutcombe, £622 for the Parkhouse Family and £605 (x2) for Andrew Jones, Launceston.
Hereford bulls extremely well bid for and reached £640 for RWH Dilling of Highampton, £635 Nick & Kate Bowden, £570 for a young sort from Chris Tucker of Truro, £560 ARP Farming, £540 GD & KE Kitto who sold other good Herefords to £510, £478 and £470. PM & JE Kitto up next selling an eye catching Welsh Black bull to £548.
Heifers on milk just a marvellous trade to a top of £715 given for a beautiful, flashy Blue heifer in from PJ Martin, other Blue heifers £690 (x2) and £650 (x2) for Nick & Kate Bowden, further good Blues £650 WJ Hobbs, £650 Nick & Kate Bowden, £625 RWH Dilling and £590 SG & MR Ley with 55 Blue heifers averaging £525 a head.
36 Angus heifers just an unbelievable trade with all forward averaging £422 per head with lots of smalls in the mix.
Top being £650 from Nick & Kate Bowden, £598 SG & MR Ley and £582 and £580 twice for AJ & PE Nancekivell. Smart Charolais heifers £635 D Philip & Son others £575 LJ Goaman who had another at £558.
Hereford heifers drew £490 for Nickels Farm Partnership, Newton Tracey, £485 PM & JE Kitto and £475 for a pair for Chris Tucker, Truro.
Dairy Sired Bulls
Only 10 Friesian bulls forward which averaged £228 per head to a top of £320 for V & M Brown, £300 WJ Hobbs & Sons and £285 PJ Wickett & Sons.
Just the 1 Norwegian Red bull which sold extremely well to £290 for a young sort in from RA Ayre & Son, Swimbridge.
187 Store Cattle
A good show of cattle this week and several quality consignments on offer.
Trade seemed a lot stronger and with several buyers harvesting last week aftergrass has been realised which drove the trade on.
The top was £2090 for a 19mth single suckled Limousin steer from Mr PS Warren of Virginstow whose impressive run saw other bunches of Limousins to £2080 & £2030.
Best of British Blues to £2020 for 2 23mth steers from Mr RE Colbear of Okehampton and 6 19mth British Blue steers from Messrs DJ & ML Challacombe of Winkleigh to £1860.
Young 16mth Simmental steers from Messrs DP & CE Martin of Bude to £1900 others at £1780.
Top of the natives this week was £1820 for a Hereford steer from Mr A Bowden of Clawton other Herefords from Messrs DP & CE Martin to £1780.
Several good meat heifers sold well this week, £2000 was the top for 2 single suckled 19mth Limousins from Messrs PS & KM Warren who sold others at £1950.
Natives to £1900 for a 23mth Hereford from Mr GJ Hookway of Torrington who sold Aberdeen Angus also to £1900.
Stronger summering cattle again in demand and more required, plenty of Continental steers and heifers at £1600-£1800.
Younger Stores
Limousin and Aberdeen Angus steers from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son of East Putford topped at £1600 and Herefords from the same farm to £1500 and Limousin heifers to £1450.
A cracking run of 10mth single suckled Simmentals from Mr SJ Stevens of Bideford saw steers to £1490(2), £1480(3) & £1450 and heifers to £1180.
Young 12mth Belted Galloway steers from Mr MN Shere of Bradworthy to £1270 and heifers to £1230.
79 Dairy Cattle
The dairy sale saw an impressive trade throughout reflective on the qualities on offer, which in fairness contained fewer stars than the last sale. This makes the trade all the more impressive.
Topping the sale at £3350 was a super 1st calving heifer ‘Sherdon Raheem Cosmopolitan 9’ yielding 38Kgs on behalf of JC Palmer of Chulmleigh.
Andrew Griffin & Family of Launceston sold their fresh heifers to £3300 and £3000.
Yeovale Farm Ltd sold their pedigree heifer ‘Yeovale Applejax Doris 3’ to £2850 with Steve Murch and Family of Umberleigh realising £2750 for their fresh heifer ‘Littleweir Cyprus Doreen’.
Cows also saw a strong trade topping at £3000 for ‘Sherdon Lambda Rolls 217 VG85’ a 3rd calving cow yielding 58Kgs on behalf of JC Palmer.
Messrs Hedden of Bideford sold a consignment of Crossbred, grazing type fresh calvers which saw great demand and topped at £2650 (x2) with other cows selling to £2550, £2500 and their consignment averaging £2440.
Pure British Friesians topped at £2250 for a 3rd calving cow on behalf of PH Collins Partnership of Holsworthy.
The sale also saw the first consignment from the Dispersal on behalf of AH & CJ Sanders of Liskeard.
The consignment topped at £2650 for a 1st calving heifer yielding 25Kgs with 2nd calving cows realising £2600 (x2).
The consignment saw a number of older cows with a strong trade topping at £2450 for a 5th calver, a 4th calving cow selling to £2350 and an 8th calver realising £1700.
In calf heifers saw a storming trade once again, topping at £2950 for ‘Yeovale Ridecup Nanette 2’ due August to AA on behalf of Yeovale Farm Ltd of Bideford with others from the same vendor selling to £2800 & £2750.
The Timms Family of Okehampton sold a consignment of in calf heifers and youngstock from their pedigree ‘Loveday’ herd which saw a top of £2850 for ‘Loveday Hampshire Beryl’ due September to Hereford.
Youngstock topped at £1500 for a group of 3 well-bred young bulling/yearling heifers with others selling to £1380 and £1350.
