A DAY of events to pay tribute to Holsworthy’s fallen heroes and celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe was hailed as a success by its mayor.

From 9am until 9pm on Thursday, May 8, the town came together for a series of events designed to both pay respects and remember the war heroes that came before them, before celebrating 80 years since the end of conflict in Europe, with a street party replete with fish or sausage with chips in true British style.

Events included remembrance ceremonies outside of Stanhope Park and the Church of St Peter’s and St Paul’s prior to the evening street party in Holsworthy Square.

More than 400 meals were served in just 25 minutes as the community came together in the spirit of celebration.

Cllr Jon Hutchings, the mayor of Holsworthy, praised the day’s events and paid tribute to all those who took part, adding: “It was a great day of commemoration and celebration. We started in the morning with the proclamation, then we moved onto the park where the school kids came up from the primary school and community college, and it was great. We read some poems, we read some tributes and overall, it was a great morning.

“In the evening, we had a bit of a celebration in the square, where we served just over 400 portions of fish or sausage and chips in about 25 minutes, and had some celebrations there as well including some music and the town band before at nine o clock we lit the lamp of peace with some more tributes and prayers.

“It was a great day for Holsworthy, as always, we like to commemorate these events on a pretty big scale for a small town and I think the town did all those who lost their lives proud”
