Six young people were praised by Devon Crimebeat Organiser, PC Oliver Tayler, who attended an open evening at Holsworthy Youth Centre recently. He was representing the High Sherriff, who had visited previously. The students were Tom Douglas (16), Steve Hayes (16), Emma Tanish (15), Emma Glaze (16), Michelle Barrett (15) and Becky Cheers (15).

A pacesetting Tintagel firm has won a national award for its efforts to promote health and safety at work. Maybridge Plc is one of only three organisations in the South West to win the Regional European Health and Safety Week Awards which only go to the very best of the regional winners.

Residents living near the Kensey View site — 15 acres of land at Ridgegrove Farm — where there is planning for around 159 homes to be built, voiced their concerns. One of the main fears aired by residents during the meeting was of the flooding in the areas, and the run off of excess water produced by the site.

Mr John Lloyd, new clerk of Bude-Stratton Town Council, attended his first full meeting at The Castle last Thursday night.

English Heritage are increasing the admittance charges to all the monuments in their care including Launceston Castle, with effect from Match 29. The charge of Launceston Castle goes up to 75p for adults, 35p for children under 16.

Lisa Spencer, of Kilkhampton School, received two books from Mr Edwin Stanbury, chairman of the governors, after she won a competition for Cornish Schools.

This year Mr Micky Hunt celebrates 21 years’ service as secretary of St Breward Silver Band – just one landmark in his 31 years in the band.

A christening gown made for her great-great-grandmother, about 150 years ago, was worn by Abigail Dawn Brown for her baptism at St Nicholas Church, Broadwood, on Sunday. The baby is the daughter of Mr and Mrs David Brown and is the fifth generation of the Shopland family to be associated with the church.

Michael Hopper and Sue Barnard were among the fifth from pupils at Holsworthy Secondary School who hit back at their critics who, in a public meeting last week, attacked the academic and disciplinary standards of the school.

Miss Marion Bridgman was the winner of the Clawton YFC Dairymaid competition at the Parish Hall on Friday.

Stan’s Stags have had to leave their pitch at Badash Farm, Launceston, after a disagreement with the club founder, Mr Stan Cobbledick. Until last week Mr Cobbledick was the team’s regular goalkeeper but he was dropped for the away game at Lewdown on Saturday and now wants nothing more to do with the club.

The Launceston Nursing Cadet team won two cups at the Eastern Area St John Cadet competitions. In the winning team were: Anna Dennis, Gillian Barriball, Pat Wyatt, Susan Brown, and Natalie Richard.

Week St Mary WI celebrated its 21st birthday with Mrs F Martin, president, cutting the cake.

Launceston Town Council will be prepared to consider in what way a scheme for London overspill might be a benefit to the town, announced Mr S G Adams, development committee chairman.

The first ever old people’s bungalow to be built by the Launceston Rural Council was formerly opened at Coads Green.

The Bishop of Truro dedicated the new Standard for Delabole branch of the British Legion outside the church at Delabole on Sunday.

The call-up of agricultural workers for National Service is to be suspected for a period of 15 weeks during the year’s harvest, the Minister of Labour announced this week.

March 23, 1946

In appreciation of 23 years’ service as honorary secretary of Lydford WI, Miss Mary Newman has been presented with a cheque.

A new organ installed in St Stephens Methodist Church, Launceston, was dedicated on Tuesday by Rev G C Shovel and a recital was given by Mr E Uglow.

After 17 years as manager of Lennards Ltd, Launceston, Mr T U Dingle has been promoted to the St Austell branch.

Mr Stuart L Peter has now been town clerk of Launceston for 21 years and on Monday the town councillors and officials presented him with a silver salver. He followed his father, the late Mr C H Peter, and his grandfather, the late Mr Richard Peter in the office, so that the family have now given 72 successive years of service in this capacity.

Tintagel parish meeting agreed to extend the lighting area to include the village of Treven, Tregatta, Treknow and Trewarmett. It was also decided to improve the approaches to Bossiney and Benvath Coves.

Lifton Silver Band, at their annual meeting on Tuesday, decided to make a fresh start as members were now returning from the Forces. Officers elected were: president, Mr J Major; bandmaster, Mr Skipton; treasurer, Mr L C Brown; secretary, Mr W A T Brimacombe.

March 28, 1936

Rapid strides are now being made in the erection of the new cinema at Bude, where the contractors Messrs Cann Bros have completed the steel works.

The future of Launceston Municipal Band hung in the balance at the annual meeting on Monday, but despite a small attendance it was eventually agreed to carry on. Mr W Worden will continue as bandmaster.

Callington Parish Council is dissatisfied at the bus service for the town, particularly on market day, Wednesday. They are asking the Western National Company to improve it.

April 3, 1926

Mr Forward’s motor bus, driven by Mr G Bottle, had its roof ripped off by tree branches on the St Breward to Bodmin route on Saturday.

Mr J E B Lethbridge, of Tregeare, has just been appointed master of the Lamerton Foxhounds who recently gave up part of their country to Mr Spooner’s Harriers. Now they will once again hunt the whole of their country three days a week.

Although the number of subscriber is 21 less than last year and there was only a small attendance at the annual meeting, Bude Publicity Association have decided not to cut down on their advertisements and the resort is to be advertise in the London papers.

Tintagel Annual Parish Meeting was lively, particularly on the subject of the bad approaches to the parish and especially regarding the Longabridge road. An engineer had said the bridge was unsafe but Capt Kirton suggested that charabane parties could get out and walk over the bridge and the vehicle follow empty. The meeting agreed to ask the RDC to keep the bridge open.
