On Saturday, March 7 the green community of Bude got together to show support for Bude’s Cleaner Seas Group on Summerleaze Beach.

Cleaner Seas Group founders Avril Sainsbury, James and Heather Sirmon, and Dave Miller were all present at the event and were overwhelmed by the warmth of support they received from the community teams.

The group has launched a kickstarter to raise funds for their fully recyclable, retro-fitted washing machine filter that will eradicate the problem of microfibres being released into the ocean through a standard domestic clothes washes.

The kickstarter has just under two more weeks to run, ending on Thursday, March 26 but has already gained huge social media coverage and support from big names like environmentalist Natalie Fee from City to Sea and Team GB big wave surf rider, Andrew Cotton.

Paul Crum of Bude Rubbish Action Group said: “I’m really proud to support the work that Cleaner Seas Group are doing to help eradicate micro-plastics from our oceans. I think it’s important that as a ‘green’ community, we all help and support each other as much as we can.”

Mayor of Bude-Stratton, Bob Willingham was also present to show his support for the team. He added: “I’m so excited that this project is getting off the ground. It will have huge benefits for employment for Bude and I can’t wait for it to get underway.”
