A PARISH council which was hit by the resignations of all its staff and councillors after a bitter row over the closure of a visitor centre led to public hostilities is one step closer to being functional again.
It comes after an upcoming election to vote for new parish councillors to run the authority was cancelled as not enough candidates put themselves forward, meaning it was uncontested.
Ten people put themselves forward for election to Tintagel Parish Council and with 11 vacancies, it meant that all of those who had put themselves forward will all form the new administration.
Cornwall Council confirmed the details of those who were duly elected parish councillors in the uncontested election.
The new council will comprise of non-affiliated or independent councillors in the form John Edward Brooks, Robert Edwards, Martyn William Charles Flew, Jeremy Nils Dorrien Knight, Marcus Ramsay May and Hugh Wilson.
Joining them will be David Hemmings, a company director who has lived in Tintagel for 40 years, Mike James-Jones, a retired managing director and ‘educational expert’, Ian Kitts, a holiday complex owner and Vikki Selkus, who will be representing Reform UK.
A statement issued on behalf of Tintagel Parish Council said: “Following the deadline for candidates to come forward to fill the 11 councillor vacancies, Cornwall Council have confirmed that they received 10 valid nominations.
“This means that the planned ballot on January 29 will no longer go ahead, and the ten candidates will be elected uncontested. This also means that the new councillors will be able to take up office sooner than anticipated and will be able to meet in January.
“The remaining vacancy on the council will be treated as a casual vacancy, meaning that the new council will make arrangements for this to be filled via co-option in due course. When this occurs it will be widely publicised.”
