Dunheved Bowling Club Opening Day for 2018 — Saturday, April 21

DUNHEVED Bowling Club opened their green for the new season recently with BBC Spotlight sports reporter, Andy Birkett, bowling the first wood of 2018.

Club president, Judith Prynne, started the afternoon by welcoming her guests, husband Peter, who is also the President of Bowls Cornwall, and Andy Birkett and by awarding an honorary life membership to Brian Keighley for his dedication and hard work to Dunheved as secretary, match secretary and as president.

As the warm sunshine continued Andy bowled the first wood — a fine effort, which finished jack high, while Judith’s wood followed and did likewise. Peter’s fell slightly short.

The next event was a ‘spider’ and was won by David Hinks with the proceeds going to the county president’s charity, ME and VIBE (Visually Impaired Bowls England).

Forty-eight bowlers, including Andy, played for a hour with one short stop for a thundery shower. Andy was in one of the winning rinks.

Once tea had been eaten, Andy was presented with some thank you gifts with Judith thanking him for opening the green.

Andy said he was honoured to have bowled the first wood, and to be in a winning rink was the icing on the cake. He wished Dunheved a successful season in 2018.

County president Peter then presented one of the junior members with the club shirt before thanks were given to the ladies who prepared the tea, and the barman, who was kept busy all afternoon.

LAST Thursday saw Dunheved win their opening game of the season against a Bowls Cornwall team, which was made up of players from 18 clubs, by just two shots.

Earlier he introduced his presidential team, and all the past presidents and senior officers of the executive. Also present were the Middleton Cup manager M Tout and the ladies John’s team manager, Norma May.

Two members of Dunheved received their 80s badges while Dunheved president Judith Prynne spoke of her delight in winning her game before everyone thanked the ladies in the kitchen and bar.

Peter commented that the green was in excellent condition and congratulated the green team for all the hard work during what was a bad close season before Judith wished her husband all the very best for the rest of his presidential year and Bowls Cornwall players a safe journey home.
