Bude Bowling Club

Opening Day — Saturday, April 13

THE opening day of the new season was held on April 13 and, although the weather could have been kinder with a cold wind blowing, it did stay dry.

Secretary Richard March introduced Owen May, a director of Budehaven Recreation Ground, who said the green looked in good condition and thanked the green keeper for all his hard work.

He wished the club well and handed the green over to president Brian Wonnacott who thanked Owen, agreeing that the green was looking in wonderful condition.

Brian welcomed everyone and said how good it was to meet new members.  The first wood of the 2019 season was delivered by Fran Goldthorp in recognition of her achievement last season of representing Cornwall at Leamington.

Paul Gardiner was then invited to unveil a small plaque in remembrance of his father, Colin Gardiner, which was placed on the extended men’s changing room in acknowledgement of Colin’s dedicated work in getting it completed. The changing room is known affectionately as ‘Colin’s Shed’.

The bowling began with a drive and afterwards members joined together in the pavilion for a welcome hot drink and a wonderful faith tea. President Brian thanked everyone for providing the tea and those who had worked in the kitchen. He also thanked those who had cleaned the pavilion in preparation for the season although he said their job was very easy as the short mat members had left everything so neat and tidy there was very little to do. He said how well the green had played and thanked the green keeper for the work he had done preparing it. He wished everyone a good season and looked forward to meeting them on the green.

Camelford and District Bowling Club

CAMELFORD’S season should have started last week with two East Cornwall Bowls League fixtures.

However, on the Tuesday, Bodmin didn’t turn up for the first match. The home squad didn’t waste the evening but had a practice roll up.

Camelford got their competitive season underway 48 hours later when they welcomed Torpoint to Lanteglos Road.

Despite playing under stormy skies, with intermittent sunshine, it stayed dry all the afternoon and everyone enjoyed a good game.

The Camels were victorious in all four triples games, amassing 101 shots to the visitors’ 51.
