Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores

TOM Dinnis’ five-wicket haul set Werrington on the way to a convincing nine-wicket victory over old rivals St Just in their ECB Cornwall Premier League clash at Ladycross on Saturday.

The Cornwall paceman, along with Sam Hockin (2-38), ripped through their West Cornwall visitors on the way to figures of 5-30 as St Just were dismissed for just 117 inside 34 overs.

Although the returning Adam Hodgson (6) went cheaply, Ben Smeeth (47no off 65) and skipper Paul Smith (61no off 45) ensured the rest of the target was knocked off in just 20.3 overs.

The victory cements Werrington’s position in third although victories for leaders Penzance and Redruth means no ground was made in their quest to retain their title.

At the other end of the table, Callington fell to a 150-run defeat at home to Wadebridge.

After choosing to bat, the visitors knocked up an imposing 311-8, which was built around South African Kevin Renecke’s 124 and a 69-ball 95 from Matt Butler.

For Callington, James Boundy took 2-60.

The hosts got off to a poor start as Alex Robinson and Ollie Allsop both went for ducks.

Although Aidan Libby (34 off 37) and Dan Carroll (25) took the score to 52, they then lost five wickets for just 39 runs to leave them no chance of winning at 91-7.

Captain Joe White (38), Boundy (14) and Alex Mortimore (23) to their credit then crucially added another 70 for the final three wickets before White was run-out to end the game.

In County Division One, strugglers’ Launceston and Werrington seconds fell to heavy defeats against two of the top three.

At Lawhitton, Launceston took three early wickets against Beacon before the third-placed visitors rallied to total 217-9. Skipper Craig Thomas led the way with an unbeaten 58 from number seven while for the hosts, Sam Pengelly (3-22) and Andrew Yelland (2-45) shared five wickets.

Launceston’s reliance on Pengelly and Kevin Worth showed once more as they were dismissed for just 79.

Although those two made 17 and 21 respectively, the next best was six as they were well beaten.

Werrington made up another point in their quest to overtake their near neighbours and move out of the bottom two following a 122-run defeat at their Redruth counterparts.

The hosts made 210-9 off their 50 overs with Jarrod Hambly top-scoring with 51.

All five of Werrington’s bowlers contributed with Cameron Wakefield’s 3-44 the best.

Although Werrington made just 88, the fact they reached 80 gave them an extra batting point.

Ben Jenkin and Mark Taskis (15no) each made 15.

St Minver’s tough season continued on Saturday as they lost by just five runs at local rivals Wadebridge seconds.

When the two sides met earlier in the season they couldn’t be separated as they tied and once again it went down to the last over.

Opener Tom Wood was the star of the show for the firsts as they recovered from a poor start to reach 206-9.

After slipping to 65-6, Wood (95 off 129) found support from Jonathan Centini (47) as they added 101 before a late acceleration from Wood took them above 200.

Opening bowlers Ross Keast (3-56) and Charlie Hawken (2-36) shared five of the wickets.

Ben Hawken (47) and Will Durrant (23) got the visitors’ reply off to a good start in adding 51 before they fell to 102-4 with both set batsmen out.

Ex Wadebridge batsman Ryan Pooley then superbly dragged Minver back into the game with 61 but his dismissal led to the visitors falling behind the required run-rate, eventually ending five short despite Ross Keast’s unbeaten 18.

Bude are now up to fifth in the table following a six-wicket victory over high-flying Menheniot-Looe at Crooklets.

The visitors were bowled out for 229 with Peter Nance’s 52 the highlight. For Bude, Matt (3-51) Williams and Andrew De Rosa (4-40) shared seven wickets.

Bude’s batting is their strength and they cruised home with five balls left.

Despite the early departure of Thomas Hall, Matt Hookway (51) and skipper Mark McManus (47) laid the foundation for Williams to come in and hammer 67. Although all three men were dismissed, Matt Mansbridge (6no) and De Rosa (14no) completed the task with no further alarms.

Luckett are now below Bude after a convincing defeat at bottom side St Erme. The hosts knocked up 255-6 before bowling Luckett out for just 144.

In Division Three East, it was a terrible day for both Launceston seconds and their Bude counterparts at Holsworthy and Tintagel respectively.

At Stanhope Park, Aiden Gerry carried his bat for his first ever league century — 115 not out in Holsworthy’s 281-3. He received excellent support from opener Jack May (41) and the hard-hitting Matt Shepherd (64).

In response, Launceston were dismissed for just 71 with Darren Jenkin making 46 of those. Jack Greening made it 37 league wickets for the season with 5-17 while Shepherd (2-30) and Ben Hutchings (3-24) knocked over the rest.

Bude were bowled out for 67 in the local derby at Tintagel with Derek Piper’s 19 the best.

All four of Tintagel’s bowlers were in the wickets with Simon Fry taking 4-19 while James Ellis (2-25), Alex Gibbons (2-13) and Jason Seldon (2-10) all contributed well.

Although Mike Taylor dismissed Shaun Keeble cheaply, Ben Jarram (19no) and Matt Pethick (26no) knocked off the runs in just 14.3 overs.

South Petherwin and Callington seconds both suffered defeats away from home.

Petherwin travelled to St Austell thirds and would have been confident at halfway after being dismissed for 210.

Adrian Clements (42), Phil Pridham (36), Adam Warne (36) and Ian Clements (25) all passed 20.

Petherwin were missing Cornwall Over 50s skipper Paul Clements and in his absence St Austell eased home.

Although Adrian Warne and Kevin Horrell struck early, Mark Bennetts (60) and Tom Rosevear (56) laid the platform for Andrew Bennetts (29no) and Niall Parkinson (22no) to guide them home by five wickets with 14 balls left.

Callington are now down to fifth after losing by 82 runs at Newquay seconds.

Fifty-three extras didn’t help Callington’s case as the hosts were dismissed for 2-8 with all-rounder Tom Neville claiming 5-41.

The visitors got off to a good start to reach 80-1 with James Moon (30), Neville (14) and Toby May (17) all getting in.

However they then collapsed in spectacular style to be dismissed for 126 as Tom Jayne ran riot on his way to figures of 6-19.

In Division Four East, Michael Barrett struck his first ever ton for Delabole after over a decade of trying, as they beat previous leaders Bugle by two wickets in a thriller at the King George V Playing Field.

The visitors chose to bat in North Cornwall and made 191-3 with Gary Spencer’s unbeaten 56 the best.

Delabole are finally starting to get a full side together on a regular basis after player availability issues wrecked the beginning of their campaign, although for once it wasn’t Glen Burrell or Adrian Pooley who did the business.

Batting in an unfamiliar opening role, Barrett blasted the bowling to all parts.Where the game was won was a partnership of 102 for the fifth wicket with Jordan Burnard who contributed 15 of those after joining forces at 57-5.

And although things got close, Barrett stayed calm to end on 135 not out (eight fours and 11 sixes) and give them a chance of survival.

Werrington thirds are just 12 points off top spot after an emphatic 74-run win at bottom side Gorran seconds.

Dan Warring, making his first appearance of the season in the thirds, made an unbeaten 90 while teenager Toby Ward (53) and skipper Dan Jenkin (60no) also made half centuries in their 247-3.

Although Werrington’s bowlers got hit for plenty of runs, Gorran lost regular wickets to be dismissed for 173, Nick Oldaker (3-59) and Nick Ward (3-23) doing the majority of the damage.

Patrick Thompson fell four short of a century as Luckett seconds were beaten by Duloe at Chapel Field.

The visitors knocked up an imposing 284-3 off their 40 overs with Simon Massey making 102 and Chris Goldthorpe an unbeaten 93. Alan Skeet’s 2-64 was the best for Luckett although Martin Budge went for just 40 off his ten overs.

In reply, Budge (36) and Thompson (96) set off at a rapid rate.

Although Budge fell, Steven Gold (32), Richard Seeley (22) and Steve Brown (21) all got in but a hefty run-rate meant the total was just out of reach.

South Petherwin seconds and Newquay thirds played out a classic at Kennards House with the visitors winning by just two runs in Division Five East.

Newquay recovered from 47-4 to reach 205-5 thanks to 86 from Lee Penrose and an unbeaten 59 from Sam Millatt.

Petherwin reached 203-9 off their 45 overs and will have rued a lack of a real substantial score as Andy Berry (21), Roger Gerry (43), Adrian Martin (37) and Gareth Clements (43) all got in without going on.

Elsewhere in the division, the nine men of Milton Abbot unsurprisingly fell to a heavy defeat at runaway leaders Menheniot-Looe.

The hosts racked up 299-8 off their 40 overs with both Bob Fleming and Mike Maiden each making 59. Paul Crocker claimed 4-48.

Milton got to 125-1 with Crocker (20), Richard Baxter (42) and Mark Jenkins (50) all making good starts before closing on 165-6 to earn eight points from a tough afternoon’s work.

In the basement tier it was a good day for three of the five Post area clubs with St Minver seconds, Launceston thirds and Werrington fourths all winning.

Boconnoc were held to 145-6 off their 40 overs at St Minver with Nigel Hocking claiming 3-20.

The hosts lost three early wickets but cruised home with Luke Osborne (66no) and Antony Ash (40no) keeping their cool.

Paddy Webber’s unbeaten 56 provided the platform for Launceston to chase down 181 at home to Gunnislake.

Gunnislake made 180-4 with Adam Emmerson (65) and Andrew Morris (63no) both reaching 60.

The hosts then eased home with Simon Wilton (45), Ted Kenyon (21) and Lewis Matthews (20) all contributing.

Werrington survived an early scare to beat their St Austell counterparts by 81 runs at Ladycross.

In a rare occasion on a cricket field, number 11 Steve Pike top-scored for Werrington with 32 in their 161-9, which also saw contributions from stand-in skipper Andrew Smeeth (26no) and Keith Moore (26). Cornwall Over 60s player Steve Jarman claimed 6-13 off his ten overs.

St Austell were second going into the contest but fell to 80 all-out with only Ryan Bate getting amongst the runs.

Dan Howgill took 4-21.

Their defeat allowed Liskeard to move back up to second after defeating Tintagel seconds by 46 runs at Lux Park.

Liskeard were held to 203 all out with Peter Ellis’ 5-21 slowing them down after a great start.

However, Tintagel were restricted to 157-9 with Martin Seldon making an unbeaten 72.
