Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, August 16
ST MINVER’S hopes of survival took another blow on Saturday as they were comfortably beaten by seven wickets at St Blazey who are joint top following Luckett’s defeat at neighbours Callington Seconds.
Minver headed to Blazey knowing they needed to win two of their final three games, but were dismissed for just 157.
Ben Hawken made a quickfire 36 at the top of the order, but a trio of twenties from Archie Edwards (23), Reece Thompson (28) and Dean Jeffery (21) were as good as it got.
The hosts then eased to their target in the 24th over despite 2-26 from Jack Cartwright.
They sit 13 points adrift of Werrington Seconds who were thrashed by seven wickets at Holsworthy who are all but guaranteed safety.
It represents a remarkable turnaround for the Devonians who were languishing in trouble for much of the campaign, following a fifth win on the spin plus an abandonment at Lanhydrock.
Werrington named a strong side at Stanhope Park and chose to bat but lost wickets throughout.
Jack Greening (2-30) dismissed the dangerous Rob May and Tom Lyle as they slipped to 47-3.
Hugh Tomkinson smacked a quick 21 from 14 balls, but once he departed the wheels fell off in spectacular fashion as left-arm spinner Graham Wild took 5-17 from 8.5 overs.
Guy Beagley (1-20 off 7) provided fine support with only Ed Walters (28 off 81) providing much resistance.
Werrington gave left-arm spinner Sam Smeeth the new ball and he dismissed Aiden Gerry off the first ball of the reply.
But needing just 110, Holsworthy attacked with Smeeth (3-63), although taking three wickets, on the end of some hefty punishment.
He trapped Greening lbw for 21 and later had Brendan Harris bowled, but Harris struck 52 from just 45 balls.
Once he departed, Matt Shepherd (17no) and Noah Pigdon (13no) did the rest.
Bude aren’t entirely out of the woods yet despite having a 28-point lead over St Minver after a dreadful performance at Lanhydrock.
Pakistani opener Amir Khan made a brilliant 190 in the home side’s 328-7, not offering a chance until he had gone past 150.
Bude’s bowlers toiled away and David Sillifant (2-58), Brett Hunter (2-48) and Matt Mansbridge (2-70) got some late reward.
The chase never got started as although the Seasiders were going okay at ...-2 with Wayne Adams (36) and Matt Whitefield (21) nicely set, but they were amongst four wickets for Aussie leg-spinner Rowan Evans (4-51) as he and home skipper Jamie Eldridge (3-27) shared seven.
Bude were 139 all out and head to Werrington on Saturday for a crunch clash.
At the other end, Luckett fell to a second defeat in three games as they lost a thriller by one wicket at neighbours Callington Seconds.
Luckett posted 243-5 at Moores Park with openers Luke Brenton and Toby May making 81 and 103 respectively, although Ben Alford (2-50) and Jim Shorten (2-30) kept the runs down.
Cally soon slipped to 16-3, but after Blake and Peter Tancock added 93, they slipped to 159-6 with Blake out for 65.
But Shorten (48) found support from Ben Alford (27) and Ryan Hodge (19no) with the latter hitting the first ball of the final over for three to get the job done.
