SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST
Launceston 4 Wendron United 0
THE improvement shown by the Clarets at Callington on Good Friday continued when they entertained mid-table Wendron on Easter Monday, running out emphatic 4-0 winners.
In bright sunshine, on an excellent Pennygillam surface, Simon Minett’s young Launceston side were eager to complete a league double over their visitors, having won the reverse fixture at Underlane back in October.
The Launceston manager fielded a positive side including a front three comprising Kian Berry, Alfie Fothergill and Lee Robinson.
It was Fothergill who opened the scoring after 16 minutes. Denham Guild was brought down just outside the penalty area and took the resultant free-kick himself. His well-struck effort was blocked but fell to the alert Fothergill who rammed home the loose ball from close range.
The Clarets were playing some good football and Berry set up Robinson for a close-range header touched over by Wendron keeper Harry Hill.
Launceston doubled their lead on the half-hour when Joe Moynan scored with a well-placed chip just inside the far post.
Robinson was leading the line impressively but it was Jack Stephens who scored the crucial third goal on the stroke of half-time, with a precise finish into the far corner.
The visitors improved markedly after the break without seriously threatening to get on the scoresheet. Clarets keeper Oliver Sidey was largely untroubled, but handled the ball well, despite the swirling wind.
Tom Manuel made one excellent clearing header but generally Launceston were comfortable holding onto their lead.
The energetic Guild made the points safe with a late goal, but the Clarets were largely untroubled in sealing a long-overdue first home victory, lifting them away from the foot of the table.
With four home games remaining, manager Minett will be keen to end a difficult season on a positive note.
Elburton Villa, guaranteed the SWPL West runners-up spot, visit Pennygillam on Saturday (3pm).
