Morwenstow teams start with mixed bag in North Devon League

MORWENSTOW’S mixed start to the season in the Premier Division continued on Saturday as they were beaten 4-2 at Appledore Lions.

The Greens were undone 4-0 by Boca Seniors Reserves on matchday one before an epic second half fightback saw them come from behind to win 4-2 at Holsworthy on August 22 courtesy of braces from Lewis Cornish and Phil Horton.

They snuck a 2-1 win in the local derby at Bradworthy last Tuesday night (August 25) courtesy of a second half own goal. Ryan Vanstone had earlier netted for the Greens, while nine-man Bradworthy saw both Lee Clarke and Shane Shadrick see red.

On Saturday they faced Appledore in Torrington but were undone despite going into half-time level courtesy of goals from attackers Jake Gilbert and Phil Horton.

Holsworthy Reserves’ tough start to the season continued on Saturday as they were thrashed 8-1 at Combe Martin. Aidan Davis netted for the Magpies who have just two draws from five outings.

Bradworthy, who weren’t in action at the weekend, have five points from four starts having beaten Torridgeside 3-0 before draws with Holsworthy and Bideford Reserves.

In Intermediate One, both Shebbear United and Putford have found it tough.

Sheb have one win and three defeats to their name following Saturday’s 3-1 reversal at home to Combe Martin Reserves, while Putford, who were thrashed 6-2 by visiting Northam Lions, have just a draw from four outings.

Morwenstow Reserves, who have nine points from nine, continued their perfect start to the campaign in Intermediate One on Saturday, easing past their Appledore counterparts 3-0 thanks to goals from Sam Jones, Tom Shadrick and Mark Skelton.

Holsworthy Thirds fell to a third straight defeat, but showed big improvements in a 5-4 reversal at High Bickington as Gary Brownjohn, Logan Flanders and Dean Holness (2) were all on target.
