WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE
Okehampton 4 Bude 2
A BUDE side missing some key players were beaten 4-2 at Okehampton on Saturday in Trelawney Division One.
Player-of-the-match Tammy Snowsill was able to start and she soon dictated play for the Seasiders, getting the ball out to wingers Mia Flynn and Eleanor Rush.
Bude dominated early on, winning the 50/50 tackles and putting the Oke defence under pressure.
The visitors were awarded short corners with Briony Varcoe coming close to opening the scoring, but her shot went just wide.
Charlotte Prime was making things happen in the middle despite having to ride stick tackles from the Okehampton players, but Bude were able to take advantage from a free hit where Lulu Goaman forced the ball into the D and got a short corner.
Naomi Hatcher played the ball out to Snowsill who fired a shot towards the post where Varcoe was able to get the ball between the post and goalkeeper.
The Devonians came back into the game, forcing the visiting defence to be at their best as Tilly Collins, Elsa Edwards and Emily Smart were all instrumental to keeping the forwards out of their D .
Just before half-time the hosts levelled the scores as although a short corner was well-saved, it fell to an Oke player who made no mistake.
After a half-time discussion, Bude started well with Niamh Turner’s runs down the left allowing Snowsill and Prime the room to open up the game.
As the away side were committing players further up the pitch, it left the defence a little exposed, and Okehampton capitalised when they picked up a loose ball and sent it high to a player in the middle. She raced towards goal before finding a supporting player who forced the ball in.
Bude were not going to lie down and within minutes they had equalised as Flynn picked the ball up on the right and made her way into the D before passing to Rush to slot home. Okehampton continued to threaten but again the Cornish defence held firm.
Bude were controlling the ball, while Evelyn Varcoe’s series of fine tackles stopped the hosts in their tracks and managed to get the visitors’ forwards on the attack.
Briony Varcoe did get the ball into the Oke goal, only for the umpire to disallow it and award a short corner.
However, Okehampton could sense that the Cornish side were tiring and they were awarded a number of short corners of their own, one of which they scored from.
Bude didn't give up and continued to attack and create chances. However, they just couldn't find that final touch in front of goal and late on the hosts got a fourth.
A long ball forward saw a melee which ended with a finish from close-range.
Bude, who remain second bottom on three points from six outings, but crucially level with Camborne School of Mines who are directly above them, welcome league leaders Truro on Saturday (midday).
