A 15-year-old cancer survivor from Bude was the youngest member of the Cancer Research organising committee for the Relay for Life held at Plymouth this weekend.
Jordan Anderton and his 'Bude Baywatch Crew' a 20-strong team of sponsored walkers did the 24 hour relay for life at Brickfields Athletic Stadium.
The relay was to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Research with themed teams walking and running some 80 miles each over the 24-hour period.
The Bude Baywatch Crew, with so many of the team coming from Bude SLSC certainly stood out running in swim suits and speedos, even getting the Lord Mayor of Plymouth to wear a beach patrollers hat as he took part!
The event started with the survivors' lap where all those who had overcome cancer shone through to show the strength of human spirit. Jordan's team did not only have him as a survivor, grandfather Leonardo Creo, an American WWII veteran, grandmother Patricia Perkins and Bude SLSC life member Peter 'Vicko' Vickery walked with all other cancer survivors.
Jordan explained that he had become involved in helping as a volunteer fundraiser as his way of giving back to those who have helped him during his cancer treatment.
Jordan's father, local policeman, Graeme Anderton said: "The atmosphere was terrific. There were over 200 participants and the feeling of positive hope was incredible.
"And having hope is what you need when being diagnosed with cancer. It touches so many of us in one way or another, and that made this event became a real family affair."
Jordan's brother Dan, his parents, friends and other relatives were all there to celebrate Jordan overcoming this terrible disease.
At 10pm, the pace of event changed when the organisers held a ceremony called the 'Candle of Hope.' With Labi Siffre's song 'Something inside so Strong' in the stadium, and the track lit with candles, the teams held hands, walked, remembered and hoped.
Graeme Anderton continues: "Everyone's emotions were running high. There were so many tears of grief for the those that had been lost and the times when you thought you were going to lose someone close to you. There was a feeling of relief and hope for the survivors. It was incredible."
Jordan and his team helped towards the £20,000 raised for Cancer Research. If you would like to know more about the work that Cancer Research does and would like to make a donation, please log on to http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/jordansbudecrew">www.donatetomyrelay.org/jordansbudecrew
