Talan’s Trust is a cancer awareness charity which was set up after Talan Penny, an 18-year-old Bude local who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer — Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) — a type of soft tissue sarcoma that grows in active muscles of the body, sadly passed away. The trust now carry out a number of awareness and fundraising campaigns in aid of those with the same condition.
Recently, the charity, which is run by Sarah Penny, Talan’s mother, was approached by Annie and Tom from The Bay View Inn at Widemouth Bay wanting to host a fundraiser for the charity. Not wanting to host the usual event, the group got to brainstorming, having gone through the usual ideas eventually, Talfest was born.
After six months of hard work and planning, on Saturday, June 14, The Bay View Inn welcomed crowds for a day of music, food, and fun.
The event welcomed a variety of local bans, including Mark Benjamin, Gary McCausland and Stuart Marshall, Crafty Butchers, Joy Machine, Boogie Juice, and Feedback, as well as their two headline acts, Joey the Lips and The Showhawk Duo.
Sarah said: “We cannot thank James, Annie, George and Tom enough for all the support, enthusiasm and joy that went into the event and a huge thank you to all the bands who were so generous with their time and energy and we are eternally grateful to them.”
Despite plenty of food and fun to be had, there was also money to be raised for a much-loved local cause.
Generously, a number of food vans donated a percentage of their takings to the charity, including 8track rum bar, St Austell Brewery and Korev Bar and Merlin the street performer too.
Sarah continued: “Thank you to Jag signs for their generous support. So many businesses and individuals helped out and supported the event. The very wonderful Tash Rowley and Frazer Shields who captured the day so beautifully through a lens.
“A huge heartfelt thank you to Liam Drewery from LDLS Lighting and Sound for creating the stage, sound and amazing light show for us, it was truly awesome.”
For those looking to party, the festival even offered some ‘banging’ music with the help of a number of local DJ’s.
Patrick Woodrow, Lisa Wood, and Alex and Pondy each got the venue bouncing with their DJ sets.
Meanwhile, face painters got attendees glammed up and ready to party.
Sarah added: “Of course all the staff at The Bay View who were fabulous too; thank you! A huge thank you to Kev O’Riley and crew for tent duty, Vicky and Barney, as well as Jon Venner for the open mic.
“Finally a massive thank you as always to our committee and all our friends who gave up their time to help for the day or evening, couldn’t do it without you, and then to those of you who came and drank, danced and generally had a ball!
“Same time next year?!”
