CONTROVERSIAL plans to partially demolish a cliffside hotel and replace it with a 50-bed care home have been withdrawn.
They also sought an outline planning permission with all matters reserved for the development of an up to 50-bed care home with associated parking and open space on the site on Hartland Terrace, in Bude.
The announcement of the plans caused outrage in the local area, with many neighbours of the property raising objections to Cornwall Council. Out of 63 comments received on the proposals, there were 59 objections, three neutral comments, and one comment in support.
It also received a strong objection from the Bude-Stratton Town Council, which said that plans in their view, showed a design concept that is completely out of keeping with the architectural language of the street scene.
The town council also raised grave concerns about a number of issues ranging from the scale and mass of the site, insufficient parking provision, inadequate access on a private, un-adopted road, and light pollution among other concerns. The council had added that in the view of its members, the proposals were “of poor architectural quality and would inevitably bring harm not enhancement to such a central and historically sensitive location within our town. We believe the building and site to be of historic and cultural value to our community.”
In the latest update to the Cornwall Council’s planning portal for the week beginning March 5, it can now be confirmed that the proposals have been withdrawn by the developer.
A confirmation of a withdrawn application made under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as amended) and the Town and Country Planning (General Development Procedure) (England) order 2015 reads: “Hybrid application seeking full planning permission for the partial demolition of existing hotel and outline planning permission with all matters reserved for the development of a new up to 50-bed care home together with associated parking and open space at An Mor Hotel/Hartland Hotel Hartland Terrace Bude Cornwall EX23 8JY.
“CORNWALL COUNCIL, hereby confirms that the above-mentioned application has been withdrawn.”
