AS the summer months edge closer, equestrians across Cornwall will be excited to enjoy the weather while out with their four-legged friend.

Many say that the bond between a rider and their horse is one built on trust, communication and mutual respect. Only the very best, who have taken time to bond with their animal can compete at the top level.

Now, the South West's very best equestrians will be taking to the stage for Launceston Horse Trials, showing their dedication to the sport and their horse.

On June 21 and 22, junior and senior riders will be making their way to St Leonard’s Equestrian Centre to compete in a variety of events, hoping to take home a coveted rosette.

Riders from across the UK will take on a beautifully presented cross-country course, challenging showjumping arena and technical dressage tests — a true test of a horse and rider partnership.

In 2013 the event held its very first British Eventing Horse Trials at St Leonard's. Now, some 12 years later the competition has cemented itself in the equine eventing calendar.

One of the highlights of the occasion is that it features the only British Eventing Novice course in Cornwall.

A spokesperson from the event explained: “Each year we welcome professional riders and up-and-coming amateur riders alike, from not only the local area but further afield.”

Because of this, and a number of other factors, the event has become well known and well loved within equestrian circles.

The spokesperson continued: “The Launceston Horse Trials is a much-loved fixture on the British Eventing (BE) calendar, attracting riders from across Cornwall, Devon, the South West—and beyond. Known for its friendly atmosphere and smooth organisation, Launceston provides the perfect setting for a grassroots one-day event, welcoming both seasoned competitors and those stepping up to BE80, BE90, or BE100 level. We will also be running a Novice section and all info can be found on the BE website.

“The cross-country course is continually developed with fences built by the renowned Willis Bros, whose prestigious portfolio includes Badminton, Gatcombe, and international competitions across the UK and Europe. The Showjumping course is designed by Clive Phillips.

“We are proud to be supported by a group of fantastic sponsors who help make the event possible. With thanks to: Maunders & Sons, Banburys Beauty Spa, Pannell Commercials, C&R Construction, Stringer Equine, St Joseph’s School, Stockdale Asset Management, and Roy Davey Agricultural.

“Whether you're chasing qualifying points or enjoying your first affiliated outing, Launceston offers a supportive, professionally run event in a truly picturesque setting.”

The event promises to provide two days of tough competition and plenty of fun, even for those not taking to the course.
