New Season Lambs

Smaller entry due to the harvesting weather and still a strong trade with the young sappy lambs very much sought after.

Top being 464ppk for 2 pens of 42kgs at £195 from Mike and Chutney Watkins of Hollam, Torrington and Graham Down of Depford, Umberleigh made 458ppk for 42kgs to £192.50 followed by 3 vendors at £455.

JA Slee of Halsbury had his 40.4kgs to £184, Chris Ham and Daughters of Frithelstock had their 42.6kgs to £194 and Mike and Chutney Watkins had their 43kgs to £195.50.

Top per head on the day was £203 from Steve Pitts of Bratton Clovelly.

167 Fat Hoggs

Still keep on coming and still in demand. Top per kilo being 410ppk for 51kgs at £209 from Geoffrey George of Looseham, Monkleigh and 400ppk was realised by Steve Andrews whose were 46.4kg at £185.

Top per head on the day was £212 also from Geoffrey George of Loosham, Monkleigh.

Draft Ewes

Despite the demand from the festival being over all buyers were in attendance and the ewes were very much sought after topping at £198 for Suffolk x from Mr RA Ayre of Barnstaple.

A Blue Texel realised £198 from Geoffrey George of Looseham and Charolais x to £197 from Richard and Nick Bond of Pencleave. Mules to £171 and Rams topped at £268 from John Hockridge, Barnstaple for Pure Bred Suffolks.

Commerical Couples

A very fast trade, doubles up to £390 from 2 vendors and singles to £405 from George Heywood of Bowden.

Annual Show and Sale of Couples Torrington Farmers Hunt

Judge Mike Hill awarded the following prizes:

Doubles - 1st prize was awarded to R Metherell at £540, 2nd prize was awarded to M Milton at £495, 3rd prize was awarded to M A Milton at £485.

Singles - 1st prize was awarded to P Ley at £385, 2nd prize was awarded to K Richard at £350, 3rd prize was awarded to P Tucker at £365.

Lamerton Hunt met a strong trade. Doubles to £395 and Singles to £295.

272 Calves

Milk Calves

A decent quality show of calves forward despite the extreme heat at Holsworthy.

Top end and medium calves saw a lesser trade but those small and plain types still look very well sold. Robert Andrews up from Saltash presented a grade 1 Charolais bull which reached £810.

Other Charolais bulls to £600 for RW & JR Finnimore & Sons up from Congdons Shop who sold others to £580, more to £540, £510 (x2) and £490 for Michael Colwell of Lanreath.

A fantastic show of Blue bulls which reached £740 for John and Dan Chamberlain, Shebbear, £720, £705 and £680 for a wonderful run from Nick and Kate Bowden, Highampton, £680 John and Tracey Cann, Highampton, £680 PJ Martin, Buckland Filleigh, £660 Robert Andrews, £650 Samuel Down of Lapford and £642 for Leeson Farming Partnership.

Rachel Skinner presented a top notch Limousin bull which drew £775 and went on to sell another at £668. Some good runs of Angus bulls which sold away to £645 (x2) for Leeson Farming Partnership.

Others £625 RW & JR Finnimore, £620 Dave and Diane Furse, Ashwater, £605 Trenwood Farming Ltd, Launceston and £600 Nick and Kate Bowden.

Inra bulls away to £585 for Martyn Heal, Torrington, followed by strong Beef Shorthorn calves which sold extremely well to £550 and £470 (x2) for Leeson Farming Partnership.

Hereford bulls parted at £550 for AJ Bunkum, Saltash, £545 Dave and Diane Furse, £540 RA Ayre & Son, £530 RW & JR Finnimore, £508 for GD & KE Kitto of Lamellion and £505 Katie Hoare, Tideford.

Bill Law of Hollacombe topped the heifer section with a outstanding Limousin which hit £710. Further Limousins £605 (x2) and £530 Samuel Down.

A superb run of Blue heifers sold by PJ Martin hit £675 with others to £650 for Bradley Farming Ltd, £640 Robert Andrews and £602 Nick and Kate Bowden.

Sweet Charolais heifers to £600 and £6580 for the Wearing Family, Tavistock and £590 Robert Andrews.

Angus heifers to £535 and £520 for Andrew Jones, Launceston, £515 John and Tracey Cann, followed by a super run in from J & RJ Steer of Tavistock making £500 (x2) and £490 (x2).

Hereford heifers saw £500 for Dave and Diane Furse, £475 GD & KE Kitto and £460 AJ Bunkum.

Dairy Sired Bulls

A good number of Friesian bulls forward with 25 averaging a respectable £250 per head.

Top of the day was £540 given for a proper type of Friesian from J & RJ Steer, others £418 (x3) and £400 for Martyn Heal, £295 for JER, J & JC Whitehead of St Keyne and £215 Geoff Endacott, Halwill.

103 Store Cattle

Numbers tighter this week due to the scorching weather but trade upheld as in previous weeks.

Top of the day was £1590 for (3) 15mth Limousin steers from Messrs Parsons of Congdons Shop whose 15mth Charolais steers also made £1560.

Messrs Thorne of Umberleigh realised £1500 for their Simmental and Hereford steers (20mths) followed by £1470 for (2) Aberdeen Angus 19mths.

Younger British Blue steers 13mths to £1390 on behalf of Messrs Timms of Stocken Park, Inwardleigh who sold a Frisian steer 12mths at £1360.

Other 9mth old Blue steers to £1330 from RGA Wood & Partners of Thornbury with 2 14mth South Devon steers to £1380 from DO Wainwright of Beaworthy.

Heifers topped at £1590 for 2 Longhorns 28mths on behalf of MT Allin of Grimscott.

Messrs GJ Hill of Patchacott sold a run of 6 British Blue heifers (21mths) to £1570. Younger heifers to £1560 for a bunch of Aberdeen Angus (15mths) from Messrs Darley of South Molton.

A run of Hereford heifers 14mths to £1240 from Messrs Holland of Highampton followed by 4 Brithish Blue heifers 13mths at £1200 from CR & CF Timms & Son again.

Cows and Calves

A lovely run of cows and calves on behalf of Messrs Marjason of Torrington realised £2880 for a South Devon cow with her calf at foot.
