THE mayor of Holsworthy has taken concerns over the safety of one of the major roads connecting the town to Devon County Council.

Cllr Jon Hutchings contacted the soon-to-be abolished county authority, which is responsible for the maintenance of all non-trunk roads in the county, after a spate of road traffic collisions on the road left multiple people with either serious or life threatening injuries after several incidents in recent weeks.

The mayor said he was concerned that the incidents might have been linked to the state of the roads in a time where the condition of the two major roads linking to Holsworthy in the form of the A3072 and the A388 have deteriorated significantly.

However, Devon County Council said that the condition of the roads were not a factor in the incidents.

It told the mayor that they had sent independent collision investigators and road safety officers to visit the site of the recent collisions in and around the Anvil Corner area, adding that feedback from the police had claimed that highway conditions were not a factor in the multiple incidents.

Devon County Council have also stated that there are scheduled repair works booked on the route.

Cllr Hutchings shared the response from Devon County Council, which stated: “We’ve had both our independent Collision Investigator and Road Safety Officer visit this week.

“An experienced Neighbourhood Officer was involved with the response to one of the closures and drove the route too, to see if they could ascertain any issues contributing to the accidents.

“Devon Highways have also fed back with the police and been told that the Highway isn’t considered a contributor factor to the accidents.

“It is also worth noting that there are scheduled works booked on this route but these were booked in before any of the incidents.”
