RESIDENTS across North Cornwall have been facing flooding this week after the region struggled to cope with back to back storms.
Following the swift arrival of Storm Ingrid after Cornwall’s battering by Storm Goretti, the region’s roads took much of the brunt, with roads left strewn with debris and some areas left completely flooded.
As a result the region has been met with a number of road closures and emergencies. Due to such conditions, the emergency services have been out in force. On January 24, Launceston Community Fire Station were mobilised to carry out a water rescue.
The crew was called into action this weekend after a car became stranded on a road prone to flooding.
The road that leads from Launceston Rugby Club to St Leonard’s Equestrian Centre at Polson is known to flood in heavy rain. The river swelled, burst its banks and left the adjacent road submerged.
This came only four days after crews from both Launceston and Bude were called into action following reports that a vehicle in Launceston had become stuck in floodwater as a result of heavy rain across the area.
A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue explained: “On arrival a car in flood water was discovered.”
The vehicle’s passengers were also assisted by the crews.
The spokesperson continued: “Firefighters assisted the occupants to leave the vehicle and to make the scene safe.”
With so much rain and flooding in the area, and more on the way as Storm Chandra makes its way across the country, Cornwall’s fire crews have reminded drivers to take extra care while driving.
A spokesperson from Launceston Community Fire Station said: “With recent weather conditions and heavy rainfall there is a lot of standing water.
“Please don’t attempt to drive through any standing water as you can never be sure what conditions are like underneath.”
