THE very first ‘Week Wander’ charity walk took place in Week St Mary on Saturday, September 6, on a warm and sunny afternoon.

The gusty winds did threaten to play havoc with the bra bunting, balloons and gazebos and certainly made ‘Bra Pong’ slightly more challenging.

The event was very well supported by the local community with ages ranging from six to 91 — mostly dressed in pink — together with a mix of four legged friends and mobility scooters.

In total 85 people walked, clocking up a total of 140 miles equating to 5.34 marathons in under two hours.

On behalf of the organisers, Sandy Smith said: “All in all it turned out to be a lovely, fun-filled afternoon with many people walking further than they ever thought possible, and was followed by tea and delicious cake in the parish hall.

“A big thank you goes out to everyone who walked, everyone who donated without walking and to those who generously donated cakes and raffle prizes and not forgetting those who donated bras which will now be sent to Africa via ‘Smalls for All’.

“This inaugural event was supported by the Week St Mary Bonaventures Women’s Institute, the parish hall, the parish council, the parish magazine, the football club, the community shop, Rae and Co for their amazing artworks and a whole host of willing volunteers, marshals and first aiders — definitely a community event, run by the community, for the community!”

By the end of the day the original target of £1,000 had been surpassed, with the overall total hitting £1,878.95.

The funds raised have now been donated to Walk the Walk — a charity dedicated to raising money for the treatment of, and research into, breast cancer.

Sandy added: “Here’s looking forward to the next Week Wander in 2026!”
