Bowls England National Championships report

DURING August, the Bowls England National Championships were held at Royal Leamington Spa.

This year’s championship was the best ever for the Cornwall teams with a winner, two runners-up, two losing semi-finalists and five losing quarter-finalists.

President of Bowls Cornwall, Peter Prynne, who is also a member of Dunheved Bowling Club, was present for 19 days of the championship. Tremendous support was given throughout, not only from Cornwall and especially in the semi-finals and finals by other South West county presidents.

Of the Post area clubs, Kensey Vale saw brilliant efforts from Nicola Gilbert to reach the National Two Wood Singles semi-final while her husband Peter was part of the Kensey Vale quartet which also included Nick Trewin, Alex Crichton and Bernie Dyer, that reached the last eight in the National Fours.

Earlier in the month, Dunheved’s Keiron Sargent from Dunheved played in the Sutton Winson Under 18 Singles and was unlucky not to progress into the next round losing on shots count back.

Peter said: “For all who were there, Keiron was as good as anyone else. Better luck next year.”

Thirteen county finals were held at Dunheved on Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8 with more success for Post clubs.

Club spokesperson, Peter Prynne, said: “It was a fantastic two days for the club, a great effort behind the scenes. The catering staff over the two days were fantastic, and I quote from many that the green was the best they have played on this year.”

Club president Judith Prynne, who passed over the green to the county, said she was very proud along with husband Peter in having the finals at Dunheved.

The Kensey Vale men who had reached the National Fours quarter-final unsurprisingly crowned county champions while Stratton’s Millennium Cup side, which is a mixed competition, reached the final before losing to St Austell.

Summing up the year, Peter said: “I would like to thank personally everyone for there kind remarks about my presidential year and the cards. Thank you all indeed.”
