WERRINGTON rounded off their preparations for the start of the ECB Cornwall Premier League season with a 40-run defeat to visiting Wadebridge at Ladycross on Saturday.

While the two sides are in the same division – they used the afternoon as a chance to get rid off the rust ahead of Saturday’s start.

Wadebridge stuttered their way to 142 all-out, that despite former Ladycross favourite Matt Robins making 56 at the top of the order.

They were going okay at 88-3 before his departure – lbw to Mark Taskis – saw them collapse to 97-7.

Taskis’ off-spin also dismissed former captain James Turpin and new skipper Kelvin Snell as he took 3-28 from six overs.

Freddie Wilkinson (18) and Matt Lawrence (29) gave the Swans a chance.

Werrington – who were without overseas Thulina Dilshan, Mark Gribble and Ben Jenkin – then slipped to 51-7 with only opener John Moon (20) reaching double figures as seamers Callum Wilson (3-11 off 6) and Elliott Dunnett (3-4 off 5) shared six.

Former captain Ben Smeeth (15) and Dan Barnard – the latter who crashed 36 from 39 balls – then put on 46, but once Smeeth was bowled by Snell who took 3-3, the end was quick.

Werrington Seconds visited Division Two East rivals Bude and ran out victors by 27 runs.

Werrington amassed 169-9 from their 40 overs with Hugh Tomkinson (39) and skipper Jason Seldon (37no) rebuilding the innings at different points. Matt Mansbridge was the pick with 3-19 from his eight overs.

Bude slipped to 41-4 with Tyler May (2-39) Ian Searle (3-20 off 7) doing much of the damage, and once James Sharman departed for a fine 37, the end looked nigh at 85-7.

The lower order, who saw Brett Hunter make 22 not out, hung around, but couldn’t keep up with the run-rate as man-of-the-match Seldon ended with 3-23.
