WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE
Newquay Seconds 2 Bude 1
BUDE were unable to build on their 5-1 thrashing of Penzance Seconds as they were edged out by Newquay in Truro.
Although the home side enjoyed much of the early possession, Bude were switched on from the very first whistle as the defence stayed composed, clearing danger efficiently and showing great communication across the back.
Newquay earned an early short corner, but the visitors held firm to prevent them from taking the lead.
However, not long after, a moment of confusion in the circle allowed Newquay to capitalise. Their forward pulled goalkeeper Jo Timmins wide to the right before slipping the ball back across goal for a tidy finish and make it 1-0.
Newquay struck again soon after with a quick counter-attack to give the visitors a mountain to climb.
Despite the setback, Bude fought back strongly and dominated much of the remainder of the half. With the majority of possession in the home half, the Seasiders created several chances and fired multiple shots on goal, but the Newquay keeper stood firm.
Captain Caroline Hockridge made sure both the squad and the umpires were fully aware of Newquay’s questionable stick tackles as the second half got underway, but the hosts also pushed forward with pace straight from the restart.
Newquay launched an early attack into the Bude circle, but Naomi Hatcher produced an excellent save to keep Bude in the contest. The ball was quickly distributed back up the pitch, and Bude began to build momentum again.
A key change saw Tilly Collins subbed on for Elsa Edwards, and she immediately made an impact, playing an important role in distributing the ball out from Bude’s defensive 16. Her calm passing and vision helped relieve pressure and allowed Bude to build more structured attacks from the back.
Izzy Sobey continued to work tirelessly down the line, forcing errors and winning a key foot inside the Newquay 25. This pressure earned Bude a crucial short corner. They received the injection cleanly and played the ball right to Sobey, who placed it perfectly onto the penalty spot for Prime to strike confidently into the goal.
The goal lifted the whole team, and the match became end-to-end. Bude pressed high, with Katie Jackson and EJ Biggadike battling hard in midfield to win possession and feed the forwards. Edwards’ earlier defensive work, combined with Collins’ strong distribution, kept Bude organised at the back, while Emily Smart remained solid on the left in shutting down wide attacks.
Newquay responded with a flurry of chances, but Timmins remained composed in goal, making several important stops.
In the final minutes, Bude pushed hard for an equaliser, winning another short corner and creating a couple of close chances in the circle.
A team spokesperson said: “It was a hard-fought match with plenty of positives for us as we showed real spirit to battle back and make Newquay work for the win.”
Bude are next in league action on February 28 when they welcome Newquay Thirds.
