WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE
Camborne School of Mines 3 Bude 1
BUDE made the long trip to Penryn to take on Camborne School of Mines and despite an encouraging performance, were beaten 3-1.
With Naomi Hatcher ruled out with a back injury, Hannah Maloney came in for her first start of the season in defence which also consisted of Evie Varcoe, Elsa Edwards and Tilly Collins.
The Seasiders started brightly with Izzy Sobey and Caroline Hockridge bossing the midfield, often playing the ball through to Mia Flynn and Charlotte Prime to drive into the home D.
Despite Chloe Hall and Maeva Motsch getting shots in on goal, they were dealt with by the home defence.
As CSM cleared their lines, EJ Biggadike picked up the loose ball as she zig-zagged into the D she was fouled. Bude had their first short corner, it was pushed out to Hockridge and her shot went narrowly wide.
CSM then upped their game, attacking Bude’s defence, but some great defensive work from the back four thwarted their attempts. However, the hosts were awarded a short corner which was well saved by Bude goalkeeper Jo Timmins, but the rebound was put in.
Bude continued to attack with Prime and Sobey a constant thorn in the CSM side as they played lovely one, twos around the defence to get into the D. However, they couldn't find that final finish in front of goal.
Soon after, CSM were able to break down their right and force Bude into their own D. The ball was placed onto a defender’s foot and from the resulting short corner the hosts went 2-0 up.
After a rousing half-time team talk, Bude were dominant, making attack after attack with Flynn, Hall and Prime all going close.
As Bude pressed the home side, at the other end, Maloney and player-of-the-match Varcoe had to be vigilant, while Edwards and Billie Sanders marshalled the CSM forwards in not allowing them to drive into the D.
It was soon 2-1 as Maloney found Sobey who went down the wing supported by Biggadike. As the ball was passed into the D the first shot was saved by Flynn who recovered the ball and fired it into the net.
Bude were bolstered and went in search of the equalise, but were denied by some good home tackling.
From one interception they quickly hit a ball up to their forward, however Timmins made a fine save to keep the Seasiders in the game.
Bude continued to force CSM back into their own half with shots going in, but couldn’t find that elusive equaliser.
CSM mounted an attack in numbers as they managed to go around Bude’s defence, and although the initial shot was saved, the rebound was slotted home for 3-1.
Bude again rallied to force some late drama, but couldn’t find a way through as they remain ninth in the table.
They welcome fourth-placed Penzance Seconds to the Sports Centre on Saturday with a midday pushback.
