BUDE’S men’s first team continued their fine start to the season with a 6-1 victory over Truro Thirds at the Budehaven Sports Centre in Piran Division One of the West Hockey League.
After an even beginning it was the Seasiders’ superior skill, fitness and experience began to make a difference, and an attack down the right wing and along the baseline saw a pass fired across goal to Saul Barraclough who neatly finished with an upright reverse flick.
Bude continued to press hard and two great chances came, but two spectacular goal-line clearances kept the visitors in the game.
Truro went up the other end and forced Oscar Kirby into a good save, and that proved even more key by the break as Thomas Hall’s quickfire brace gave the hosts a commanding cushion.
Truro started the second half rejuvenated and pulled one back from a penalty corner, and were denied by several Kirby saves as they threatened a fightback.
However, Bude found their mojo once more, producing the feisty, high-intensity hockey that is too hot to handle for sides at this level.
A turnover high up the pitch by Kristoff Saunders and simple passing with Hall saw him receive the ball back in the D where he slotted home to the relief of the abundant supporters and effectively kill off any hopes of a comeback.
Bude then finished strongly with excellent play from the whole team creating many more chances. They managed two further goals as Robbie Scragg bagged a brace with a tap-in and a screamer that almost broke the net to cap off a wonderful first home win of the season.
Bude Seconds were narrowly beaten 2-1 at Duchy Thirds in Piran Division Three despite Matt Smart’s goal.
The firsts visit Ocean City Thirds in Plymouth on Saturday (2.30pm) while the seconds host their Bodmin counterparts (midday).
