A GROUP designed to encourage local people to engage in further learning or employment opportunities will be hosting a project open day at the Emu Snack Shack Café in Launceston tomorrow (July 16).

The Atlantic and Moor Local Activity Group (AMLAG) is part of Cornwall Adult Education and is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of Community Led Local Development (CLLD).

There are three projects running in Cornwall, being delivered in different Local Action Group areas including; AMLAG (Atlantic and Moor), SELAG (South East) and WCLAG (West Cornwall). These are all ESF funded under the CLLD programme.

The groups will look to create sessions where they can to meet people’s individual interests. They currently have some face-to-face and online sessions running in the following areas: Arts and Crafts; Cornwall Culture and History; Nature, Environment and Animals; Leisure; Communication Skills; Health and Wellbeing.

They hope to engage with local learners aged 19 and above who are currently not working, taking a career break or are simply looking for a new challenge.

Launceston, Bude, Bodmin and Newquay have been chosen as areas of focus for AMLAG as the learner postcodes are those that fall into lower social output areas (LSOA) defined by the 2011 Census.

Explaining more about AMLAG, outreach community tutor Jane Hill told the Post: “Our aims are to get people active and to engage in further learning or employment.

“We are governed by the applicants postcodes, that have been searched for levels of inactivity in the local population.

“We are learner led and offer rolling programs. I am running several groups in Launceston in animal care, art and employability skills. We can also offer qualifications if the learner wishes. We hope that they will also take up the maths and English qualifications on offer.

“I have linked up with a learner who has opened up her farm in Launceston to AMLAG participants. It’s called the Emu Snack Shack, and it’s provided a wealth of resources and support to our learners. This is where our open day will be.”

The project open day will be held at the Emu Snack Shack Café on Ridgegrove Hill in Launceston from 11am to 1pm.
