THREE generations of Launceston women took to the water recently to raise money for a good cause as they took part in the Burgh Island Swim Race.
Each year, swimmers from across the South West and beyond to dive into open waters to push themselves across the one and two mile courses to raise money for charity.
This year, among those taking the plunge, were Steph Dodds, Madi Vine, and Anne Sopel.
All local to Launceston, Steph and Madi regularly train at Launceston Leisure Centre and Anne is a long-standing swim coach at the facility. The mother, daughter and granddaughter trio, were all braving the waters for a cause very close to the family’s heart, Pregnancy Crisis Care.
Commenting on their choice, the trio explained: “Pregnancy Crisis Care provide invaluable support to people who have experienced baby loss, and pregnancy related crisis. This includes miscarriage, stillbirth, unexpected pregnancy, post-termination, termination for medical reasons, ectopic pregnancy, and fertility issues, as well as pregnancy support. They rely solely on donations and provide free counselling and support for those in desperate need.”
Ahead of the race, the local community rallied to support the three ladies, allowing them to smash their initial £500 target. Fundraising efforts went above and beyond meaning the trio were able to raise a grand total of £1,250.
With the big day upon them, all three ladies completed the swim despite the challenging conditions which saw a significant swell, and waves reaching upwards of five feet.
With friends, family and colleagues turning up in droves to show their support, everyone thoroughly enjoyed a memorable day on the island.
Putting in some impressive performances, Steph completed the race as the 21st female in 50 minutes, Anne as the 29th female in 54 minutes, and Madi as the 30th female in 54 minutes.
